Montmajour Monastery

Tom Novasic takes photo

We stopped along the way to the Saturday morning market in Arles to take photographs and walk around the grounds of part of the Montmajour Monastery, parts of which go back to the 10th century. Our guest Tom Novasic takes a photo of the ancient chapel above. The simple 12th century cemetery chapel of Saint-Croix was haunting in its lonely situation, surrounded by a pasture and most striking, by graves carved out of the rock. One of the graves was obviously for a child. (Below) The monastery was once only reachable by boat from Arles. Today it is landlocked and thanks to extensive renovations in the 20th century can be appreciated once again by all.
