High Above the Rhein

One of my favorite places to bring my guests is a place that I’m really not supposed to drive to. The road in is clearly marked “For Farmers Only.” I’ve always wanted to add a line in magic marker, “and for James Derheim, sometimes.” The road winds its way through fields and vineyards, coming to a point with a splendid view over the Rhein Valley and the village of Bacharach. Burg Stahleck, a ruin since the 1600s, rebuilt in the late 1800s and early 1900s, hovers below the vantage point. Also seen in this photo is Devon Kruger, enjoying the first few days of his Germany, Switzerland and Austria tour. Our VW van is at left.
