The Camarque

camarque-from-ramparts-of-aigue-mortes

When one thinks of Provence, flat terrain and vast stretchs of salt marshes are not what is usually envisioned. The Camarque region, however, is very much a part of Provence but is often skipped by American tourists. The Carmarque is a land filled with a variety of birds, including flamingos, waterways on which to kayak or canoe, black bulls, cowboys (Les Gardians) and horses that are born black and turn white as they age. This photo was taken from the amazing fortified town of Aigue-Mortes’ ramparts.
